Beowulf's Battles
The Battle With Grendel.
The way the battle between Beowulf and Grendel, a man-eating demon, started was when Grendel terrorized the great hall, Herot, and ate many warriors after being irritated by the noise of them celebrating the people's victories in the great hall. The battle with Grendel is described to be Beowulf's first great, heroic achievement.
After the attack, Hrothgar then calls for Beowulf for help. Beowulf travels to Herot to fight against Grendel. When Beowulf and his men arrive at Herot, his men sleep while, Beowulf pretends to be asleep in order to attack Grendel when he arrives to Herot. While they slept, Grendel attacked one of Beowulf's men and eats him. His men and Beowulf then start battling with Grendel but then start to realize that their weapons are useless against Grendel. Therefore, Beowulf then sneaks up on Grendel to rip on of his arms off of him. Terrified, Grendel starts to run away from Beowulf because he knew Beowulf would end his life but being was stopped by Beowulf when he rips his other arm off. When Beowulf decides to let Grendel go, Grendel leaves to his swamp but ends up dying there. While Beowulf was praised for defeating Grendel, Grendel's mother is angered and becomes furious over the killing of her son.
